We LOVE Gelato!

It is great fun to make, and to eat and share :)

Once some basic gelato bases are mastered, the creative potential for inventing flavours is huge - we have even experienced tomato gelato, and mango and spinach sorbetto - all more delicious than they may sound!

A Brief History of Gelato

Traditional Italian gelato is a frozen dessert, similar to ice cream, that is made from milk and sugar, and flavoured with fruit, chocolate, nuts and/or other confectionary.

The name 'gelato' comes from the Italian word meaning ‘freeze’, ’icy’ or ‘frozen’. Gelati is the plural of gelato.

A similar dessert made with water instead of dairy is known as sorbetto, or sorbet :)

Milk based gelato originated in the cooler regions of northern Italy, whilst sorbetto originated in the warmer south.

Whilst mostly enjoyed in cones or cups, gelato is also used in other traditional Italian dishes such as tartufo and spumoni.

Although a gelato maker will often produce a smoother gelato, it is not essential to have one in order to have fun and make delicious gelato! If you do get into gelato making then there is a broad range of gelato/ice cream makers to choose from, to suit a variety of budgets and requirements.

As mentioned on our homepage, all our recipes are dairy-free, sugar-free and unheated. We feel this gives them the vibrant, fresh and light taste associated with gelato, whilst also making them healthier and accessible to more people :)

As many of our recipes are purely fruit based, they can be enjoyed regularly as part of our 5+-a-day :)

Enjoy :)

Happy Gelati e-books

We have written two recipe e-books, to share with you our experiences of making fresh gelato at home :)

All the recipes were lovingly created in our own kitchen - with a lot of fun and yumminess involved!

Our intention is that these recipes are positively health-giving to you and your loved ones, from both a nutritional and a 'fun' perspective :)

The books include many beautiful and delicious recipes, as well as our ideas for simple gelato bases to inspire you to unleash your inner child and experiment with your own wonderful creations! Believe me, we had as much fun with the 'less than fastastic' recipes that were part of our experimentation for these books than we did with the recipes we've included - so go on, give it a go :)
